In my work I often face people complaining that adopting standards will prevent them from innovating.

You know, Apple, Microsoft, & Google refuse to standardize their desktops, whilst we crazy FOSS people have standardized. Yet, where do you see all the desktop divirsity?

Standards allow for that!

@Adrian Cochrane That's exactly the thing. Standardization fosters innovation, but when companies talk about "innovation", they really mean "something that will increase our profits." It's corpspeak. Just like "synergy" (meaning "something that will increase our profits") and other meaningless phrases.

@alcinnz Standards are necessary for that! It's how we develop modular interoperability that drives diversity.
