Hello, @Framasoft. I have a selfhosting post above here that is now busy with a lot of reshares thanks to awesome Fediverse friends. What do you think?

@ademalsasa

Yes!
I do self-host a couple of services for myself and my family.

Email
Nextcloud
Chatt (matrix)
Some game-servers too ofc

@dibi58 @strawberryfieldsforever @strypey @lightweight @paulsutton

@selea thanks for your recommendation! I'm a user of your Nextcloud it is amazing and beneficial. Reshared.

@ademalsasa @selea @dibi58 @strawberryfieldsforever @strypey @paulsutton Yes, I do - I"ve got a couple external VPSs and one at home. I host a couple NextClouds, a Mailcow, some Rocket.Chats, a few Drupals, (Only|Collabora)Office, a couple WordPresses, a Bit/VaultWarden, a Piwigo, a HomeAssistant, & a couple Minecraft servers for the kids. Planning to install a Frigate instance at home, too: github.com/blakeblackshear/fri

@ademalsasa
I'm using Yunohost, have Nextcloud, Peertube (somewhat), Hedgedoc, Plume and some other services running on there.

I also have a VPN and a webserver running. All of the above with a sustainable cloud provider.

Lastly I have a Raspberry Pi with Libreelec and Kodi on it. But that's not reachable from the outside ๐Ÿ™‚

@ademalsasa - I noticed you don't have Docker listed anywhere. Lots of things you can _host_ in Docker, but not Docker itself. Have you thought about experimenting with using a containerized setup? Or perhaps Virtual Machines with VirtualBox or OpenVZ? Information on these kinds of things may be relevant to your Self Hosting list. ๐Ÿ‘

@ademalsasa @selea @dibi58 @strawberryfieldsforever @strypey @lightweight @paulsutton I'm self-hosting (or have self-hosted) various things: xmpp (prosody), mail (notqmail + uw-imapd), bittorrent (transmission), ftp (netbsd's ftpd), web (netbsd's httpd), vnc (tigervnc), DLNA (minidlnad), mpd + icecast , games such as openarena, unreal-tournament. Also firewall (npf), dns (unbound).

@encelado beautiful and exemplary. I learned a lot just by one comment! One question: is now Unreal Tournament freely licensed?

@ademalsasa no it's not , but the unreal engine source code was made historically available for non commercial use, so that, following the GOTY edition, the game saw one of the earliest native Linux ports (maintained by Loki Software) ever made, which also included a game editor. I've used that version extensively (owning a GOTY edition disk, one of my favorite childhood games) on *BSD via the Linux ABI.

@encelado pretty clear, thank you! I learned the existence of UT99 and Loki thanks to you.

@ademalsasa: you're welcome, glad to spread my passion for such a classic. By the way, you really came up with a nice idea by starting this thread

@encelado ahaha, greetings to you my new friend! Glad to find one more SDF person here at Mastodon.Thanks in advance.

Funny you asked @ademalsasa , I just came across a rough plan to transition Disintermedia to self-hosting, written before the pandemic nuked my life. Best laid plans of mice and men ๐Ÿ˜ฉ At present I'm struggling just to manage my various devices.

@ademalsasa No. I haven't had security of tenure in my living situation to have a server-in-the-closet, nor the security of income to pay for a VPS. If I did use a self-hosting distro, it would probably be either #FreedomBone or #YunoHost.

@bob

@ademalsasa There is also the freedombone.net project, which enables small scale selfhosting including a small fediverse server.

@ademalsasa @RTP @aexy

Very nice! Thank you. I like stuff such as #FreedomBox that optionally come with their own hardware. Such solutions make it attractive to get your non-technical family and friend to use it, and you can do support for them.

Recently bumped into thehelm.com which is somewhat similar, but unfortunately much less open.

@ademalsasa @humanetech @aexy

Great lineup! ๐Ÿ™‚

Selfhosting is something I always like to promote.

More fun to build something IMO than outside, partially controlled server virtual/cloud based hosting.

+ control inside network/server opens opportunities to play with new ideas/integrations/security.

@downey beautiful! Now I can share :xmpp: at Mastodon. Thank you very much Sir Admin.

@ademalsasa If I may, I consider @yunohost way better than #FreedomBox: it has many more apps available to install and it has a greater community working on it.

I am running it on my VPS and I love it!

#yunohost #selfhosting

@tommi hello, Tommi. Thank you very much! My post was about selfhosting for everyone particularly the bundled devices and Freedombox is the choice. I am looking for bundled devices with Yunohost now.

@ademalsasa

What is the difference between freedombox and yunohost

@kris hello, Kris. The different is the hardware bundling.

We can purchase a Freedombox as a complete package suite, while with Yunohost we buy the hardware separately.

We here includes non-techie friends & family who want just works.

I am waiting for Yunohost hardware bundling, Kris.

Thanks for resharing!

@ademalsasa I'm gonna get off my butt and set up nextcloudpi soon.

@SaulRS951 nice idea. Would you like to publish a writing about it?

@SaulRS951 I would love to read your writing if you publish it at your blog.

@joanisc Syncloud is a great FLOSS and hardware business, I saw, and already mentioned in the "Nextcloud Devices" above. Thanks for pointing it out, I can learn so much.

@ademalsasa It doesn't look like that podcast is actually self-hosted. It uses fireside.fm/ to host the podcast files, images, and the RSS.

@ademalsasa
Well, that's just great!
