because mastodon.social obviously is the mastodon server with the worst funding and it's definitely not small instances that could need some more money to pay for infrastructure, moderators, etc /s

just call your app mastodon.social if you want it to be a mastodon.social client, jesus christ. it's almost as if mastodon isn't even meant to be a federated server software

how about this: server info could include a donation link, and this donation link could be displayed in the app as "support instance"

@megalodon They should just make the donation link a part of the Mastodon API, and then all servers and all clients could support it.

@steve @megalodon 💯

I do think that's the direction they're going, and they test things like this in the app… at the same time, it's possible it gets hairy with app store rules around payments.

@cassidy @steve @megalodon
Im pretty sure that it gets hairy if you want to sell things, I thought donations would be fine?

@megalodon@floss.social wait until you find out what Sharkey does

@megalodon we do not want to do this because it opens many potential ways to be abused and have people sending money to bad actors, all through « official » apps, and will get us banned from the stores

@renchap @megalodon maybe a "reputation" for instances should start to be calculated so the ones that surpass a threshold can benefit from features like this.

@santiagofn @renchap this sounds like a bad idea tbh.. so the small instances (that would benefit the most) wouldn't benefit at all. also, there would need to, again, be some authority on which instances' donation links should be allowed, which would probably lead to injustices

@santiagofn i think @renchap's concern is very valid tho - maybe, if apps were to display arbitrary donation links, a should also be included

@renchap @megalodon A fine reason abstractly, but the end result is significant self-preferencing. I think it would be better to just not implement it at all.

@megalodon@floss.social This is exactly how :misskey: and forkey instances handle it. Agreed! :mastodon_oops:

@megalodon have you dropped support for Megalodon? I noticed in your profile that you suggest we use something else.

@megalodon this would be huge improvement, honestly

implementing this feature
specifically for their home instance is dodgy at best, but implementing it as a feature that any instance could tap into would actually be a super welcomed change- likely one that would quickly propagate to other clients

@megalodon if there's any further interest in this from instance admins/third-party client devs and upstream doesn't want to implement it, then i could probably try and give implementing this a go

@megalodon I 100% believe Gargron would defederate if he believed it wouldn't tank the userbase. Then he'd try to get VC money somehow.

@megalodon@floss.social so glad they formed that non profit with VC types on the board. otherwise we wouldn't get to experience this type of horseshit. /s

@megalodon Is almost like Eugen has gone on a power trip upon realizing that 90% of the fediverse is on Mastodon software, and 90% of that is on mastodon.social.

The software itself has been going through some wuestionable decisions as well, sooooo there's that. I'm happy on Iceshrimp as much as I used to be on Firefish. I feel like all of Mastodon is derogating itself

@megalodon Locking feature specifically to Mastodon.social in the "official" Mastodon app is a huge issue imo and can hurt the Fediverse. They should make a API where every instance can use this feature.

@Mastodon

@voxel same with promoting the gmbh's "flagship instances" heavily within the app. @Mastodon

@megalodon @Mastodon They say they did it to make it easier for people to get started, which is understandable, but this is definitly not ideal and does centralize more instead of federate it. There are definitly better ways, for example a smth which helps you choosing a instance which fits preferences you can select.

@megalodon knowing how broken IAPs on PlayStore are, I bet it doesn't make sense to try to open it up.
Much more so for legal reasons than any other.
Playing the devils advocate, would mastodon.social have to send the donations manually to other "registered" instances? Who is going to keep track of those finances? Who would eat up the transfer fees?

I don't see how donations API would work with the administrative requirements. Maybe someone can expand on those suggestions?

@pak0st @megalodon i don't think you need IAPs, just a good old-fashioned link would do the trick.

@megalodon unironically they should pay a _lot_ more moderators but yeah, this is pretty shit

@megalodon "3rd party server" so the way mastodon is meant to be used ? since, you know, it's a fucking decentralised and federated service

@sleepybisexual @megalodon when that happens i expect most ppl to just move to a fork of it, like glitchsoc

@megalodon bruh.

Like, building an instance donation mechanism into an app is such a fucking good idea. A donation API for instances would be so, so good.

Making this only work with a project’s flagship instance in a federated network just feels shitty.

@deadsuperhero @megalodon everything Eugen is doing these days feels pretty shitty...😒

Silencing people whose opinions he doesn't agree with, limiting replies soon which will obviously make misinformation *way* worse on Fedi, and now "donations for me, but not for thee!"🙄😑

@deadsuperhero @megalodon as far as I know that's the plan, but facilitating that is complicated (legally & fiscally, and to a lesser extent technically)

This is just a first step on the way there, and you've also gotta deal with App Store policies.

@megalodon The Mastodon team building this software is immensely underfunded. What is wrong in them asking for donations? 🥲

@nileane @megalodon the point of contention isn't asking for donations, but rather building such features only for mastodon.social. These could instead have been more generic additions to their API that could allow other servers to be able to offer similar options within the Mastodon app.

@msfjarvis @megalodon I get it, but as far as I can tell, they’re just trying to get more donations to fund the software we’re all using so it can improve and gain more features, including via items on their long feature request list, like a donation API.

@nileane @megalodon I'm not against them seeking more donations, but I feel if they can add something for their own server then they can take the time to also make it available to the broader ecosystem. This shouldn't be the app for Mastodon GmbH the company, but for Mastodon the ecosystem.

@msfjarvis this us the long-term plan, we are starting with our own server because thats far easier (on both the technical and legal sides)
@nileane @megalodon

@megalodon this is the first step for a bigger project we have to allow anyone to donate to their instance and to the project. We are starting small with our own server, but plan to expand this to every instance that wants it, if possible also client developers, and the Mastodon project.

@ConnyDuck We will publish a blog post with more details about this in the coming weeks

@megalodon

@renchap this is what should've been in changelog. ‘We are currently experimenting with the ability to donate to your instance directly in the app. Currently this only works on our flagship instances, but we plan to expand it to third-party instances in the future, stay tuned for that.’. How it's phrased at the moment is extremely disappointing, as if we aren't all in this together 😕

@megalodon

@brawaru This could have been worded better, yes. We are planning to publish a blog post about our long-term goals on this topic, I am not sure when yet as the summer vacations are in action and slowing things down.

@renchap @megalodon this is a good direction, but I definitely feel like it could have been communicated much better

@megalodon I have yet to see a person so shameless as this.

@megalodon

> This option will not appear on instances other than mastodon.social to avoid confusion

Well, then it shouldn't show on Megalodon and @moshidon either, should it? Just to avoid confusion, y'know.

@megalodon@floss.social I just found out abt stuff like Mastodon literally yesterday, this is a crazy thing for them to be doing

@megalodon@floss.social is it a case of "there isn't a standard for listing/getting donation urls" or do they just really suck

@megalodon fyi on the google play store you are not allowed to solicit donations unless you are a registered tax-exempt entity. There are many examples of apps being taken off the store because they had a donation link. I know Mastodon recently formed a 503c in the US, and I assume they are using that?
