It's a Big Freaking Deal when we can move any #UnitedNations organization away from #Microsoft.
The system-wide IT shop UNICC has announced its move to #Matrix:

@downey But Munich!!111!
@downey element can replace email?
Mostly sounds very positive!
But:
"... these organizations have replaced all their email ... with the Element app ... Element to secure our communications with partners, replacing email, ... "
Unless Element is running an email server for UNICC, that sounds like UNICC will try to convince UN staff/volunteers to stop using email. If they're currently using MS Outlook, that's understandable, but better would be to *also* get secure email e.g. #Protonmail.
@furbyonsteroids @downey This part about email looks strange
I hope for the usées that they do not want to replace email by an instant message app...
@furbyonsteroids @downey But that's a good news !!
@downey I think you’ll like this news, @lightweight?
@SimonCHulse @downey nice to see it!
@SimonCHulse @downey Matrix (and the Element folks) certainly have their issues, but up against MSFT, it's like Biden vs. Trump. They both suck, but one sucks a on a whole different level, i.e. existentially.
@downey Holy shit! Applause to that!
@downey This has improved my day immensely.
@downey UK based COMPANY element? ... CEO and co founder?....
So it's a company named element, not the open source project.
Would that open then up to lawful interception by UK legislation? And why not run their own infra? I'm confused
ESS is a self-hosted deployment for #Matrix homeserver management, and also provides client software, along with technical support.
I don't know the specific implementation details here. But AFAIK, it's still the case that UNICC run data centers are at least capable of offering international jurisdiction.
@downey thank you for the follow-up! Much appreciated
@B4ckBOne @downey Element (element.io) is the UK HQ’d company which maintains the open source Element project (github.com/element-hq) and distributes it as Element Server Suite (ESS). UNICC is using ESS and running it themselves on their own infra - which is the whole reason why you’d use Element & Matrix in the first place :)
