🤔 As of Friday 7 July, apparently my account has been suspended instance-wide by moderators at @fosstodon — so all of my followers there from the past 6 years have been disconnected, and no one on that instance can follow me any more.

No reason or advance notice was provided, and no reports were sent.

Update 2: Apparently I was suspended in November 2022 for posting a video of goats yelling like humans.

🗓️ 4 days and still no email reply or answer here from @fosstodon about why they mysteriously suspended this account.

But lots of stories since then from users and other important voices about similar moderation concerns.

What is going on over there?

@fosstodon @downey As a use case for others…being disconnected suddenly…does that mean you cannot export/import your follow list, or any of the other suggested steps to migrate to another server? If so, does that mean we should be making backups, in case an instance goes away/is shot down, or gets snarky? I’d hate to lose all the effort I’ve put in to curate my follows.

@downey@floss.social @obviousdwest@mastodon.social

#calckey has export and import functionality - it's quite granular, which can be useful if say - you only want to export follows or blocks, though coversely does require you to go though several steps export the whole of a user account.

@Theriac @downey @obviousdwest yes but can you use it when your account gets suspended?

@stooovie@mas.to @downey@floss.social @obviousdwest@mastodon.social
I've never been in a position to find out, however as part of a sequential backup you have granularity about what you back up.

@stooovie@mas.to @downey@floss.social @obviousdwest@mastodon.social
though talking of accessing your account from the outside you might want to look into RSS - which will allow you to download your posts, and possibly attachments

@obviousdwest
you should do backups.
Another incidence was recently when mstdn.social blocked mastodon.art w/o warning.
All links got lost iirc, and it was based on a admin stupid move, being a bit trigger happy.

This can happen in error as well. So better be safe than sorry. Give our admins the possibility to fuckup and cause minimum harm.

@fosstodon @downey

@obviousdwest @downey Yes, you should be doing so habitually, as a rule.

@downey the fediverse urgently needs to divorce identity from server instances by means of #NomadicIdentity

Quiet suspensions and defederation are extremely harmful to our social graphs, which should belong to no one but ourselves as sovereign individuals.

I think these (valid, important) thoughts are in scope for the work @cwebber and team are doing with @spritelyinst but would defer to them to confirm.

I’m interested in a universal & portable username/account/identifier for Fediverse. I suspect that DNS already solves many of the underlying problems and challenges. What we need is more of an accessibility and usability challenge, where I can easily turn a domain name I own into a secure #Fediverse / #ActivityPub server.

Anyone doing managed #Shuttlecraft hosting yet?

Following this thread in the desperate hopes that something awesome develops out of it... 🤞

@downey OK, I wasn't crazy ... sorry the read this (and thank you to welcoming me here) 😊

@danslerush Yes, received reports from you and others. Still no response from them.

@downey I have been seeing more broken threads lately, but didn't connect the dots on what might be causing it...

I didn't think I've said anything that controversial?

Anyways, thank you! I think I chose the right instance!

@alcinnz As far as I know, it's not our full instance suspended, just individual accounts. (So far?)

@downey @fosstodon I would generally appreciate more transparency about blocking. As the friction in Fediverse increases it's becoming uncomfortable, suddenly losing connections to your friends without at least knowing why etc.

@downey We haven't gotten any emails to reply to. What is it you'd like to know?
