Would you be able to deal with a locked bootloader on Asus ROG Phone 5? I would be so happy to degoogle. Any of the Linux Mobile options would be even better. It's 500km for me though.

@Satiah @kde A quick look online turned up some results (see, e.g., xda-developers.com/asus-rog-ph), but nothing I can help with.

That's a shame you are so far away. Maybe you'd be interested in organizing an installation event yourself 500kms from Berlin? 🙂

@be4foss curious what you’ll be installing on old Android devices, e.g. LG Nexus 5X (given it is my dev phone and I can flash it whenever I’d be curious which Linux you are thinking of)

Any recommendations for a Galaxy S22 Ultra?

@be4foss @kde Nice. What are you putting on the laptops?

@Niall @kde

In the project we are embracing and onboarding participants to the many choices one has with Linux, meaning we can tailor the software to the needs of the users themselves!

For newer devices we suggest Fedora (KDE / GNOME) or Linux Mint. For 10+ years old devices Linux Mint XFCE or Lubuntu.

We will try to understand what they want / expect (classic feel? consistent interfaces? newest features? etc.). We will have some demo computers to try out.

Other ideas are welcome! 🙂

@be4foss @kde already do no windows computers in my home, been using linux for about twenty years , and its only gone funny on me once

@be4foss @kde

This is a fantastic project and I wish you the best of luck with it and hope you have lots of attendees.

I do think there is a business opportunity (or perhaps a charitable one) of refurbishing/reselling older machines by doing just what your seminars are doing, but installing Linux and then selling the machine. Many people could use a machine that costs less than say, $200, but is still very functional for everyday usage.

I agree! You may want to check out projects like ComputerTruhe (@computertruhe) and Free Geek.

They have been active in upcycling hardware with Linux for some time now.

If you know of others, let us know in the replies.

Oh my god this is a great idea. Why is there no more event like this‽

@bitfucker Over the next 2 years we plan to organize events like this with volunteers around the world. If you would like to get involved, be in touch!

As part of the "Opt Green" project we are also creating info materials about software-driven e-waste (invent.kde.org/teams/eco/opt-g) and providing Linux installation help and generally documenting what we are doing so others can learn from what is working (and what is not) 🙂

But you don't have to wait for us: check out your local Linux User Group!

Thanks for the information! Unfortunately, linux users are small in my country. There are rarely any events held here. But this is giving me an idea on how to help people revive their old hardware!

Is this a regular event? It’s such short notice!
