GIMP 3.0 is released, check it out!

gimp.org/news/2025/03/16/gimp-

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who contributed in any way - from testing and submitting bug reports through to designing, coding, fixing, packaging, testing some more, translating, documenting, hosting, administration, so many people, so much work, so much to be thankful for!

Welcome to GIMP 3.0!

@GIMP When will you get rid of the discriminatory name for the software package and heed the good suggestion of GLIMPSE as name?

@carl @GIMP What does that acronym stands for? Genuine question.

GIMP

@Mgfp @carl GNU Image Manipulation Program. Before it joined the GNU project it was called IMP.

@GIMP @carl You're saying that the acronym was a coincidence, and not intended at all?!

@Mgfp @carl the people who first made GIMP were entirely unaware that the word had connotations beyond being the name of a character in a film. Some of the current developers also have no experience of this - with English not their first language.

@GIMP Yes, that's OK. But it still is no reason to not change the name now. One can always learn and do things better than before. @Mgfp

@carl Personally Indifferent towards this, especially after this interaction. Btw, what would "GLIMPSE" stand for, as an aconym? That was my original question. I'm new at the Fediverse so I might have unintentionally pinged the GIMP account(but I don't regret this interaction tho).

@Mgfp to look shortly at s th = to glimpse
to catch a glimpse = getting to see something briefly, that may be hidden normally
