SEEKING A NEW VOCABULARY TERM
So you know how you ask for an email (not an SMTP, yahoo, google, aol, or etc)? You can also ask for a call or text (not a telephony, SIP, T-mobile, ATT, Voynage, or etc). So XMPP works the same way, but we don't have a word for it.
I need a word that means contact me over #XMPP, without using XMPP; which is a protocol, or Jabber, which has been intrusively trademarked. Put your thinking hats on. What word would work? It might need to be a new one.
#TIL the 'standard-messaging' invitation-format!
https://xmpp.link/#user@domain
This goes to an elegant xmpp.org landing page. They see a prominent button for chatting, from their client, and large icon-links to download pages of possible clients for only their platform.
OK, so what do you think of the way I called it 'standard-messaging'? Not absolutely technically correct, a bit arrogant, but probably effective?
@Delib A "chat"?
@Delib - a secure chat or schat :P
@Delib "I.M."? (instant message)
@Delib Most people use app names these days. It sucks, but it is what it is. So I think it's generally easiest to use an app name after you know what the person has installed for XMPP, or what kind of device someone has.
Once you're chatting with them on XMPP, you could say "message me", which is valid for any messaging protocol or platform.
@Delib That said, many people agree that an XMPP-specific, other term would be nice. But it seems close to impossible to get the XMPP developer community on the same page about any new names.
@raucao
Last weekend, I've installed @yaxim on a family member's android tablet, who was already using #xmpp on iOS and Windows. He immediately proclaimed: "Look, I have @Monal on my tablet now!"
That said, I'm using "Jabber" as the term for the ecosystem, as the trademark allows it, and so far none of the proposed alternative terms (like "zimpy") were able to catch on.
@Delib
@ge0rg OK, I think Zimpy is the winner.
@Delib is this the right place to file my objection to the poking, jabbing, and webfingering we keep foisting on the world? what ever happened to a gentle breeze, a tickle, a homing pigeon, a message-in-a-bottle?
@Delib
When I try to explain people how to contact me via #XMPP, there are two ways:
1. The easy way:
"You can contact me via Quicksy".
Since it is available for iOS and Android for free and my JID is registered there.
Advantage: People can explain this to others.
2. The advanced way:
"I am using messaging apps which support a messaging standard.
My chat address is ...
You can choose an app you like:
https://apps.xmpp24.de/en/ or
https://xmpp.org/software/
and an provider:
https://providers.xmpp.net/"
@Delib
I am sorry that this does not answer your question. When people are onboarded, I say something like "Send me a message" or "Send me a message via [APPNAME]" (if I know which app is used). I recognise that many user users simply use the appname.
@eversten
There is a way in between: Send an invitation. No phone numbers involved, but also no server choice necessary. Unfortunately that's currently only supported by @prosodyim
@Delib
@mdosch
There is also a way to send #xmpp invitations regardless of the specific server implementation: https://xmpp.link/#georg@yax.im
It can be either just the JID, or contain an invitation code based on https://xmpp.org/extensions/xep-0401.html
@eversten @Delib
Hi @Delib
I would say "message" ... But that true that usually people use the name of the app
