I'm trying to wrap my head around ActivityPub. Is there a good plain English explanation?

I am thinking if this scenario is a/ possible and b/ easy: a blog(-like) engine publishing entries with ActivityPub, allowing the Fediverse to comment with Mastodon/Gnu Social/whatever, and having a web frontend that would show both the entry and the discussion.
Would Mastodon "understand" the "blog entry" objects? Would the engine need to "pretend" to be a Mastodon instance, by, for example, respecting 500 character limit?
I guess I need to experiment
