We recently discovered that the #libcamera + #pipewire stack was actually broken on most distros for devices requiring an IPA - such as the #PinePhonePro and other mobile phones - when using distro-packages and not building either of the two projects from source.
#ArchLinux / #Manjaro and #Alpine / #postmarketOS have updates for that in the pipe now.
#debian got that fix a bit earlier already, #Fedora will likely follow soon.
tl;dr: the modern linux camera stack is slowly falling into place.
@rmader Now if only we had open source drivers for modern webcams and laptop cameras...
@Conan_Kudo yep, let's hope #libcamera can repeat the #mesa success story.
@rmader Does the community have the willpower now that it did 20 years ago with Mesa? I sure hope so...
@Conan_Kudo @rmader UVC drivers are a thing. It might not cover modern webcams.
The Logitech Webcam C310 works great under the UVC driver on linux. Got it from family that was getting rid of it.
What is crazy is that its sold for $30 new 11 or 10 years later. Though I can say its just a webcam and its not that bad. Its very usable as a webcam.
@jason123santa @rmader I have a Logitech C920 that I bought almost ten years ago. It's still pretty good. Though occasionally it turns me green, which worries me...
Laptop webcams are the real problem, as those are using non-UVC interfaces now.
@Conan_Kudo @rmader green webcam is a bit worrying you don't want to be on a call or whatever and the webcam turns green.
Newer laptop webcams might not be UVC but the laptops I have are older models but work fine in linux. They are supported by UVC I think
@rmader thanks for all your hard work and great communication. It's exciting following the progress and seeing the demo images and videos.
