Installing debs on Ubuntu 23.10 isn't as easy as it used to be – https://www.omgubuntu.co.uk/2023/10/install-deb-ubuntu-23-10-no-app-error
@omgubuntu
Does this mean Ubuntu is making a more definite split from Debian?
@eagerpebble Probably not, no. I imagine it's a temporary oversight due to the new App Center being fairly new.
That said, MAJOR software continues to be distributed as debs for Ubuntu, so… It not being able to actually let users install those (out of the box, without knowing about Gdebi or dpkg command etc) is a bit of a strange one!
@omgubuntu
Ok. I wasn't sure if this was part of the "everything is a snap" path they seem to be pursuing.
@pro Replying as someone who personally always installs debs via the CLI, I know right .
But replying as someone who writes a website where the majority of readers do everything using a GUI… Lots .
@omgubuntu I had trouble installing Chrome .deb. I finally got it installed after a couple of tries. Had some trouble installing Flatpak on to the system too.
@omgubuntu
Title of the article is click-bait.
Gdebi is still existing. You must install it from App Center. („Oh! It's terrible! It it's horrible! I'm dying!”). I don't understand where is the problem.
@olgamatna If you think it's clickbait, that's fine - but I'm more than happy with my choice of lede
Here's the situation: user goes to Chrome download page, is given a deb, is told to double-click on it to install … and nothing happens in 23.10 apart from an error appearing to say it can't do it (which doesn't tell them the user how they can).
To my mind that is not as "easy as it used to be" when double-clicking the deb would open the software center and let the user hit install.
@omgubuntu At around the fifth paragraph, I think there's a "doesn't" missing from "but it (currently) do the business".
@ProfessorCode Whoops - now fixed
@omgubuntu Smells like more effort to get everyone to use snap.
@omgubuntu When I double click on a deb, it opens up in the App Store...
Now I'm wondering how I got that feature...
I don't remember installing anything specifically for it
