Linux Weekly News subscription giveaway

I get my subscription through my @fedora contributions - dating back from when I was a poor grad student, but now that I'm on a stable financial footing I'd like to pay it forward!

For those who have not heard of it, lwn.net is an excellent news source for developments around the community. Articles are eventually free for all after an initial period where they're subscriber-only.

@fedora please reply, publicly or privately, stating your interest in Linux and free software, and that you're not eligible for a group subscription to LWN (and $75 per year is too much), and I'll pick a recipient this weekend.

I will follow up after a few months and if it works out well, I might do another round.

Please boost this if it might be useful to someone you know!

Redefining social platforms as media won't solve the Facebook problem, and if done the way Bill Barr's DoJ has proposed (justice.gov/ag/department-just), would help entrench Facebook as the monopolist and obliterate their competition. That entire letter looks as if it were written by Facebook lawyers.

The key obstacle to solving this isn't the distinction between tech and media, it's the distinction between speech and reach (i.e. producing content vs putting that content in front of people).

idk why Scarlamagne's example of humans locking up animals is a zoo instead of anything the meat industry does. maybe the writers or the studio were too afraid to point out how fucked up the way we treat animals is?

@galaxis @jk @pinafore pinafore is what I use on my 2009 Thinkpad and it's truly wonderful; can't say enough good things about it.

It still amazes me that #accessibility is one of the major selling points of #Pinafore. When I first started, I thought it would be speed, offline capabilities, simple UI, something like that. Accessibility was not my main focus. mastodon.tardis.pw/objects/ab7

Also note I don't put the blame entirely on the developers themselves. No architect or civil engineer has to go out in their spare time to learn how to make accessible buildings or crosswalks. It's part of their core education.

Somehow, my CS education thought it was super important to tell me about linked lists and data structures, but not how blind people use the internet. I think they could have spared at least a week on this.

@neauoire @f people have been using RSS and Atom feeds for Gemini content.
My site provides both, for example. gemini://alexschroeder.ch:1965/do/changes
As for Gemini enabled feed browsers that can render the content, I don’t know. My guess is you need to install CAPCOM locally or write your own.
