I want to like Matrix / Element, but Element might be the worst piece of software I've ever used.

Nearly every day, it either hangs indefinitely or forgets my login info, or some other bug (with most being showstoppers).

The UI is confusing and I have a thousand rooms that I can't get rid of that clutter everything (as I've attended conferences from the past few years in it).

When it works, it's nice and all... but it rarely ever works.

I really *want to* like it. 😕

@garrett Sadly I have the same experience, lots of friends are switching away to Signal or Discord simple because of the infamous indecipherable messages issue that lasts since last Autumn. If you ever hear about a properly encrypted, open and free, trustable, monolithic, decentralized, federated IM with a decent UX please let me know.

@KekunPlazas @garrett
well, theoretically, there is #XMPP, but I think the community has long lost interest in developing the standard, clients, and servers :(
Oh, and there is email, of course. With #deltachat providing a "chatty" UI on top of the email transport.

@muelli
I'm curious on what you base this, as the community is actually very active in both standards and software development 🙂

You can get an idea of some of the activity at xmpp.org/categories/newsletter

If you have any questions about the world of XMPP, I'm happy to answer them!

@muelli Okay, that's one opinion, which I can easily refute by pointing to plenty of active XMPP apps with encryption (one-to-one and group chats).

My family and I use XMPP daily, it's our main way of texting/calling each other.

Sometimes I think people who used it "way back" often have the worst opinion of XMPP, because they look at older software like Pidgin, and miss all the exciting innovation happening in XMPP in recent years.

But if someone genuinely prefers Matrix, that's fine by me! 🤷
