@evan I went down a rabbit hole recently, trying to determine the ideal temperature of our home. It turns out that "thermal comfort" is a whole extensive field of research, and there are multiple standards defined for it.

Spoiler (or not): there is no ideal temperature that suits everyone! Instead there are ways to calculate (estimate) the percentage of people who would report as being comfortable/uncomfortable given certain parameters (temp, humidity, air speed, etc.).

@evan In the end, I went with a simplified "adaptive comfort model", which is derived from the average outdoor temperature over the past 30 days.

It's definitely accurate enough so far, I'll be curious if that holds as the seasons change.

@mattj @evan Ah!

@mattj @evan Most important is absence of drafts and predictability. When I was a kid I'd always wear woolen long-johns to school if outside temp was colder than -5 C . Central heating at our school was set once every fall, so room-temperature was very easy to predict. Had to factor in a lag-time of ~24h. Always comfortable, except if the weather took me by surprise.

@mattj @evan No, it's very easy and there is only one right way 😜. Turn down the temp until spouse complains, then turn it up a notch.
