Anybody have recommendations for #email providers? I've been using @mailbox_org since 2019 but the service is going downhill. They are outright blocking mail from a number of legit senders, support now takes days to respond and when it does it's not particularly helpful).
I last reviewed mail providers in 2019 here https://changelog.complete.org/archives/9952-review-of-secure-privacy-respecting-email-services .
My criteria -- it must: let me bring my own domain, by privacy-respecting, have reasonable support, not require clients other than IMAP/SMTP. #askfedi
@mailbox_org Thank you all for your suggestions on #email providers! I wound up evaluating several, and wrote up my review here: https://changelog.complete.org/archives/10711-review-of-reputable-functional-and-secure-email-service
tl;dr: I found #migadu to be fantastic, with personal support (they even added a feature within a few hours at my request!) and a good featureset. Unlike others, it's got an admin interface that is like doing the fun bits of running my own mail server without the annoying parts.
I also reviewed several others thanks to suggestions here.
@jgoerzen did you really mean to mention "rainloop" in the conclusion there? it's not mentioned anywhere else in the article, and ... uh... there are issues with rainloop, the webmail client...
@Anarcat Thanks; I meant to say Runbox. I've fixed it.
@jgoerzen @mailbox_org I also went with Migadu. Just out of curiosity, what feature did you suggest?
@narunya @mailbox_org To do proper filtering, you need to do so by envelope recipient. Migadu puts that in an X-Envelope-To header, so that was easily enough done. But I discovered when I sent mail to myself that X-Envelope-To wasn't set on those messages (only ones coming in from outside). They added it, making filtering easy in all cases.
@jgoerzen @mailbox_org great article. I went through a similar adventure recently. I landed back at Fastmail. Proton was just awful. Posteo was lacking.
I chose Fastmail for the integrations. My family isn't all off Google and we use a shared family calendar. Fastmail integrates well with that. 1Password integration for masked emails is also great.
My privacy needs are low so the privacy concerns for me aren't an issue. Better than Google and Microsoft at least.
I'll keep Migadu as a backup
@yulian @mailbox_org Thanks for this. I'm interested in the Google Calendar integration. Can you tell me more about how that works?
@jgoerzen @mailbox_org if I link my Google account, it lets me interact with all calendars. Including shared and Family account ones, which you can't do with just a sharing link. This lets me see anything my wife puts on the Family calendar, and I can do it all from Fastmail. If I add something to my Fastmail calendar and select the synced calendar from Google, it will show up for others.
I think it's just normal Calendar API stuff for Google, but it's integrated well.
