The volunteer IRCops, in their quest to wrestle power away from its owner, may win the battle for getting users to move to their new server, but they are doing massive damage to over the long term by manufacturing this "hostile takeover" that was based on lies and provocation.

Here, a leader in IRCv3 development and KiwiIRC client gives up on IRC completely because of this stupid drama:

For me, it's just redoubled my support of but it's a shame.

Regarding the freenode controversy, I had thought the fault was mostly on one side.

But after seeing this post by prawnsalad, I'm not too sure...

May be the 'echo chambers' played a role?

My org is looking for an asciidoc or markdown toolchain consultant. We need templates and tooling that end up with PDF docs. It all needs to be FOSS, usable by people on Linux/Mac/Windows, and backed by git or svn. We're command line, emacs, vim types, but interested in guis too.

For reference, we have a Latex -> PDF repo: github.com/OpenTechStrategies/

If you're interested, hop into chat.opentechstrategies.com and say hi!

All leads appreciated. Feel free to circulate this notice. Thanks!

you, a normie: the internet is for having fun and also getting stuff done more efficiently

me, an intellectual: the internet is for taking strong positions on things you largely can't affect as an individual, and inflicting emotional harm upon yourself and others by judging everyone, including yourself, according to impossible standards

@Iutech @phryk @liberachat Indeed, this is a bad move. .chat belongs to Donuts, probably the worst (they signed with MPAA to take down domains with a simple email). eff.org/wp/which-internet-regi

It's even worse now that Donuts was bought by Ethos Capital (the guys who tried to take over .org)

So before everyone panics over the #freenode "take over," or whatever the heck is going on, instead of just migrating to something with the word "libre" (or similar) in it, treating every project with that word in its title as if the name guarantees anything, especially #privacy, which is a moronic thought for a public, centralized #irc server, my personal recommendation is #oftc since that is where Tor seems to do their IRC. They also have a web client at webchat.oftc.net/.

The logo went up on the website way back in 2016 even before it became the new owner. Staff didn't revoke the owner's access to the domain registration and nobody complained about a "hostile takeover" back then. Why this time?

Here's the blog post from 2017 announcing the sale. Apparently I am the only person on the Internet who read it. I always figured everyone else knew who owned it, since it wasn't hidden or anything.

All I have to say to folks that just learned this week that was sold 4 years ago to someone:

It's 2021 and you're still not decentralized?
