The last contribution to #Signal's server software was on April 22, 2020. Due to the sudden commit drop to literally 0 it is no longer possible to seriously call current Signal versions fully open-source.

That has no effect on the messenger's end-to-end encryption or its overall security but it does compromise the trust in the Signal Foundation, especially when considering that they did not give any reason for not disclosing the source code.

When you're talking about Linux, it's okay to say that it's "open source".

It's okay to say that it's "free software".

It's okay to call it "GNU/Linux", "Linux", or to mess up its name.

It's okay to refer to it as "the one with the friendly penguin".

Part of RMS' legacy has been an incessant obsession with terminology and pedantry, overshadowing far more important shared objectives which are fundamentally emancipatory in nature.

Pedantry is not activism; it is alienating, not emancipatory.

#Question to #fediverse
What kind of (meta) data will be exchanged over to the proprietary network(s) when you start using them with a #bridge from #matrix-synapse?
Can anyone give some (indept) explanation or links to #documentation about these #privacy concerns?

The reason I wanted to be so thoughtful here is to show the legitimacy of free software and free/open standards to my extended colleagues who don't always think about such things.

In those circles, the email signatures tend to be loaded with proprietary social networks and messenger apps.

The other stuff is pretty obvious or has written standards, but with its decentralized nature, I want to get this one right. πŸ˜‰

spoiler, don't want to bias you

So personally I started writing "Fediverse" and then realized all of the hard work @cwebber and others spent on the W3C standards work for ActivityPub, so I started thinking maybe it would be better to refer to the actual protocol.

Of course, I'm still writing "email" and not "SMTP", so maybe it's a similar comparison?

Regardless, I appreciate the poll feedback!

25: Governance, Leadership, and Founder's Syndrome

What is governance? To what degree are leaders within a governing institution subject to its rules? We use this framework to discuss the unexpected announcement of RMS's re-appointment to the FSF board.

After 18 years with the Free Software Foundation, I've decided to resign my position as executive director, effective at the end of a transition period. We'll be sharing further details, including information about that transition, and a few more words, in the coming days. It's been a humbling honor to serve this institution, and to work alongside the FSF's staff, members, and volunteers over the years. The current staff deserve your full confidence and support -- they certainly have mine.

We released a new episode of @fossandcrafts about "Governance, Leadership, and Founder's Syndrome"

But it's also about the surprise reinstatement of RMS to the FSF board, seen through that framework.

I don't know what to say other than: this wasn't an easy episode for me to record. But we thought it was important. We tried our best to address this within a thoughtful framework that also lasts beyond the current moment. I hope we did okay.
