This weekend would be a perfect time to #GiveUpGitHub.
#GitHub is the #Twitter of software development, creators of the most enticing proprietary walled garden ever made for #FOSS developers.
@downey Well, in my case I would host my project on GNOME's GitLab instance... but doing so would hurt GNOME because it's a project that Google wouldn't like very much
Any other alternative that provides a CI service?
@CleoMenezesJr gitlab.com is actually proprietary. It's based on the open source version of GitLab, with some proprietary things added
@CleoMenezesJr
While GitLab.com is partly proprietary it is IMO the least bad option out there and an easy route to #SelfHosting.
It would be really nice if more SVC's realized that CI is an essential part of the package.
@nahuel @downey @Codeberg
@ami From what I can see, Codeberg is on track to offer a CI service, which is great.

@nah
Yes, I saw the update as well.
This is really good news

@giuliohome Google can ban GNOME from the GSoC if there are projects that violate its ToS hosted on GNOME servers
Certainly GNOME being excluded from the GSoC is not exactly a good thing, since it serves as a method of entry for many newcomers
@giuliohome Btw, no, I don't work for Google. I'm currently unemployed :p
@nahuel
if X violates ToS of Y, Y will take action against X.
The fact that X is hosted by Z doesn't mean that Y will ban Z but that maybe Z will ban Y.
@downey GitHub was literally bought by ?
M$. Embrace and extinguish
@downey I would say the largest percentage of users who participate in crypto, federated servers, other critical infrastructure or even just the internet in general are all bottle necked at anyone of these companies. Amazon, Google and Microsoft. Anyone of them could easily control or manipulate you or your projects. I would say Apple too but honestly they don't know shit about the internet.
@downey Glad the #GiveUpGitHub campaign was launched, but judging from the mailing list it looks as if it’s already fizzling out: https://lists.sfconservancy.org/pipermail/give-up-github/
@downey interesting comparison between GitHub and GitLab. I was very keen to the first and quite unsatisfied with the second, but this link made me change, at least a little bit, my mind. Not fully convinced, but anyway, interesting to read. I think there's some exaggeration regarding some specific aspects and points of view while ignoring other perspectives.
@downey
it's so saddening to see this. GitHub was once an excellent resource of resources. pity it's heading this way.
i wish there was a carbon copy of it before the site went down the chute!
