#foss doesn't just show you how the sausage is made, it recruits you into making them.
Everyone gets to work in the sausage factory, this is not a guided tour, this is participatory community and your help is critical to making thing happen. If you've ever stood around wondering why feature or bug didn't change in a decade, this is why.
(You might think that's unfair or too demanding, but better making sausages than *being* a proprietary sausage )
@doctormo Alright, you got me. I am compiling inkscape rn to see if I can get some debug info on a gimp palette segfault.
@doctormo Argh. I have to bail. Can't get past this error:
```
$ ~/bin/inkscape/src/build/bin
(1.4.x) $ ./inkscape
** (org.inkscape.Inkscape:49469): ERROR **: 14:17:53.491: Cannot load glade file: /home/donn/bin/inkscape/src/share/inkscape/ui/inkscape-start.glade:229:33 Invalid property: gtkmm__GtkNotebook.focusable
```
Am on a recent Ubuntu. I pulled 1.4.x. I managed a compile, but I can't run from build/bin at all.
Not a C++ critter, very lost! Sausage fail
@doctormo Okay, got it today. I was ignoring your pristine instructions on https://inkscape.org/develop/getting-started/#building-inkscape-linux for some damn reason. Go figure!
Now the debuggenation can begin...
@doctormo Aside from my master’s degree project, which was a lot of C++ programming, I’ve always been a casual programmer. Being able to write macros to add functionality that solves a problem for me (and maybe others) is a pretty powerful thing. This is a lot less likely in the non-foss world.
I definitely feel like I’m standing on the shoulders of giants, but the more we all contribute, the better everything gets.
@doctormo …and I gave up sausage (and other mystery meats) years ago
