Hey @universalhub or @gbhnews immigrant question: I thought wasn't allowed to take sides in this. I expected some sort of treaty. Or Boston pizza to be a donut. 😉

@doctormo @universalhub @gbhnews
I don't wanna be edgy but arguing about food often combined with references back to some grandma that makes the speaker "an italian" - is probably the most American thing.
I've had Italians here in Sweden eating Swedish pizza going "oh thats a weird local take" and thats about it.
Not said as an insult to USAians - I love my USAians, you lot rock... but when you start talking about food as if it was a religion most of the rest of us tend to back away :)

@doctormo @universalhub @gbhnews
"You can't get a real Taco in [insert Midwestern State]" or "Why should Japanese people make pizza" said in Japan.
Again I love the lot of you, but MAN you have got to stop taking food so seriously <3

@doctormo @universalhub @gbhnews
Full disclosure where I am from the saying "hunger is the best and only spice" is a thing so perhaps I am on the other side of that spectrum culturally :D

@ohyran @doctormo @universalhub @gbhnews

The above "That's a weird local take" applies to pizza in Japan something fierce. I personally am not amused by the various Japanese takes on pizza, but they also do more garden variety pizzas, so I can find a pizza to order that I'll be happy with.

But wrt. deep dish vs. NYC style, I'd really like to have both available. Also New Haven calzones (at least as were available there in the 1980s).

@ohyran @doctormo @universalhub @gbhnews my gentle pushback is that food is often a proxy into subculture, community, and identity, and so while some of it can seem silly up front, there's more to it. (Anecdotally my italian coworker got annoyed at the random stuff we put on pizza too lol)

@ohyran Imma stop reply guying in a sec lmao but I think my pushback is more on the tacos comment and stuff like that than the pizza one, since I feel pizza as a form has been more spread around. I'm all for the way food transforms when brought to other places through diaspora, but I also think if you're in said diaspora having the strong opinion is fair too.

@absconded no apologies needed friend <3
I hear and get what you mean and you're right ofc. Just me being a tad spikey (had a dude from the US say to me "as a swede I think I know more about [Swedish thing] than you [who's family have been in the Nordics since at least 1650]" and maybe that got me riled up)
Never apologise for speaking your truth in a kind voice, it matters <3

@ohyran Thanks for the grace! People definitely have different responses to unprompted feedback so I try to be careful on here lol. I definitely don't claim the dudes who talk like that, been dealing with people like that since joining the fedi haha
