The Emperors new clothes. By Hans Christian Andersen. Definitely can be used to illustrate many startups I suspect. 😏 Theranos for one.

I've used OpenOffice/LibreOffice for a long time, but it's always been kind of heavy—I mostly persisted because I needed to deal with M$Word docs and it does very well at that

I need that a lot less now, and when I do, I can use the web version. Looking for a good, styles-based word processor that's a lot lighter than LibreOffice but has good Open Document Format support. Any suggestions #lazyweb?

Bonus points if it runs on both Linux (I use xfce or openbox under Xorg) and macOS without too much hassle. Linux is required, macOS is a nice to have.

The pipelining infrastructure in the GCC's driver class discussed the other day calls some "hooks" for the appropriate language (decided at compiletime) registered using C macros. I'll be going over all the significant hooks for C in a rough approximation of the correct order, ignoring anything for C++. Most of the rest are for initialization!

Which I think I'll start with LANG_HOOKS_PARSE_FILE, or I might push this off until tomorrow...

All C-like languages first finalizes that initialization

Hello. I need some #research #help.

In the 1980s (1990s?), there was at least one TV show (I believe in the UK) where part of the programme was dedicated to transmitting #games via audio to viewers, to be recorded (to cassette, I suppose) locally and then could be played at home on their computers.

If you know the name of the show I'm talking about, or any TV show that experimented with data transmission, please let me know!

Boosts appreciated.

@be Things were worse before USB C. Fiddling with a USB cable to put a phone on charge - often while half asleep - could easily result in a damaged socket.

The Computer Literacy Project Archive has searchable annotation of every program and segment - and the video too.

I am currently working adding #share links to my blog (I know, it's bad, but I somewhat want people to read my stuff, so...).

Is there a canonical way to implement this for #Mastodon/the wider #Fediverse? #askfedi

I am in need of a reasonably high quality photo printer with a reasonable ink cost to performance ratio.

What'cha got?

Is there an ecotank printer that works well for photos?

#Librarians friends of the Fediverse, I am looking for interesting newsletters or RSS feeds about libraries I could follow. Could you help me?

Mostly around:

#library and #librarianship in general, #archives are an interest too, physical and digital sides both
All things #public #library
#cataloguing in all its form
#games library, in particular #boardgame library

Languages:
Mainly EN and FR, but feel free to point to stuff in other languages, I will check it out, thanks to the miracle of today’s internet translators.

Random opinion about faucets with touch screens instead of handles:

If they added something to measure how much water runs on each tap, people could consider it "surveillance".

But because there is a touch screen, it becomes "modern".

Sure it is stupid to replace a handle with a touch screen, but otherwise how could you monitor wasted water without sounding like you're trying to control its usage?

I appreciate this WordPress philosophy overview. More products should be built with these principles in mind:

Works with little configuration and setup
Designed for the majority
Makes decisions, not options
Clean, lean and mean
Strives for simplicity
