So hey, a ray of light:

One of my clients, [huge company you have heard of], just DECLINED a [vendor] offer to install a “first one’s free” proof-of-concept AI server with a pile of fancy GPUs, because *the power requirements were so high they would skew a key internal sustainability metric*.

AI nonsense being delayed or deferred because of a green energy initiative? Inject that shit right in my veins!

@dwenius Relatedly I've heard of an outright ban from one of my clients (also major!) on sustainability grounds!

@alcinnz @dwenius I wish we could "name and claim" these companies, or that they'd do it themselves. I'd rather work with organizations passing the bar on the ground for not burning the planet.

@TheEjj @cwicseolfor Mine's a government agency. I tend to contract for Australian/NZ government agencies, or for iwis (Maori tribes).

I don't think I need to say more than that: If you have reason to deal with them you will!

(grumbling about NZ's austerity policies...)
