So hey, a ray of light:
One of my clients, [huge company you have heard of], just DECLINED a [vendor] offer to install a “first one’s free” proof-of-concept AI server with a pile of fancy GPUs, because *the power requirements were so high they would skew a key internal sustainability metric*.
AI nonsense being delayed or deferred because of a green energy initiative? Inject that shit right in my veins!
@dwenius Relatedly I've heard of an outright ban from one of my clients (also major!) on sustainability grounds!
@cwicseolfor @alcinnz @dwenius It’s got to be Apple, right?
@TheEjj @alcinnz @dwenius Apple has their own AI nonsense, but seem to be doing so largely for marketing purposes without making it actually important to anything (they also co-opted the AI acronym into "Apple Intelligence" which I thought was pretty cheeky.) I am not happy that they decided to toe the marketing line but at least it has been subtly telegraphed as "This is all flash and no bang."
So if you were serious, no, my money's on different companies altogether.
@cwicseolfor @alcinnz @dwenius Apple is doing their own AI stuff, certainly, but they are the only “Huge company that you’ve definitely heard of,” that I know of having a sustainability project with their goal of being carbon neutral by 2030.
I don’t think Apple is a moral arbiter in any way, they have plenty to answer for. but of the big companies like Amazon, Microsoft, Google, etc; they are only one I can think of that would weigh environmental impact.
@TheEjj @alcinnz @dwenius Dozens of household co's have made sustainability PROMISES although many have been quietly walking them back, especially since the US election. Apple also has its own in-house chips (remarkably efficient) and AI, though, wouldn't need someone showing up with GPUs.
There are a couple big names promising C-neutrality by 2030 on this list too, but aggressive goals aren't necessary for an AI install to completely blow up a co's energy budget.

@TheEjj @cwicseolfor Mine's a government agency. I tend to contract for Australian/NZ government agencies, or for iwis (Maori tribes).
I don't think I need to say more than that: If you have reason to deal with them you will!
(grumbling about NZ's austerity policies...)
