My first experience with youtube-dl was through a program that used it (vlc, mplayer (now mpv) maybe), so that I could stream videos with free software. But I also use Tor, and back then, Tor was really slow, so I was forced to either pause a video and let it buffer (huge waste of time, unless I planned ahead), or download it and watch it at my leisure. That's when I started using it directly.
