On International Day of People with Disabilities, we strengthen our community's resolve to be inclusive for all, and add the following item to our Code of Conduct under behaviors not allowed:
"Uploading images, audio, or video with Public visibility (appears on Local or Federated timelines) without adding ALT text media descriptions"
Effective 1 January, such items may be removed, limited, or other actions taken. We will continue to highlight them as a reminder.
For instructions on how to add media descriptions to your toots, see this page in the Mastodon documentation site:
This policy does not apply to items marked "Unlisted", "Followers only", or "Mentioned people only".
@admin @ChanceyFleet Are you aware of the existing bugs on AltText and the limitations of captions on the platform?
@admin While I am not on your instance and I think this is a really admirable idea, I saw a reference to this in the accessibility tag and wanted to add - I hope you'll make allowances for people with hand and mobility problems who might have trouble or cause themselves pain by typing extra text, or who in some apps might have trouble using the alt text interface. Perhaps asking for a compromise of "please caption" included in the toot?
@admin Hi, why not automate this process so that the Mastodon takes the description to the images from the title. It is clear that not all users give the full name to their images, but still such a function would not hurt.
