Pinned toot

Recently read Walkaway by Cory Doctorow and started to appreciate how cool technology actually is/will be; simultaneously realized that my current job isn't headed anywhere I want to go; figured I might as well jump into a boiling vat of CS to see what's on the other side.

I'll be shooting for an hour+ of working on CS for 100 days, posting the sort of projects I do each day. Hit me with your thoughts/opinions if you'd like. Interested in working on FLOSS projects someday.

Ok, we're at the end of our first week of working with our new #opensource / #FOSS IT environment. The mail server #migration is done, everything looks well. I still get a lot of user support requests, but more in a general 'where can I find this and this' sense.

Our users now have access to email (Zimbra), files (Nextcloud + Collabora), chat (Rocketchat) and videoconferencing (Jitsi). We'll be adding more services soon, such as a wiki and kanban board. Finally a peaceful weekend :)

But ideas often don't catch on for really stupid, mundane reasons that have nothing to do with the value of the idea.

And sometimes the world just isn't ready for the idea.

And sometimes the idea requires destroying a whole bunch of other stuff (that might need destroying) in the process.

I think a truly humane interface requires destroying most commercial software.

Gonna go out on a limb and say that a browser's private mode should offer no clues to a website that the browser is in private mode.

I really feel like this should go without saying.

there are two wolves inside you. they handshake and establish a secure channel via diffie hellman key exchange. a third wolf inside you is sniffing packets on the network,

Inexplicably, whenever I walk past my boss' office, I always get a whiff of formaldehyde. I feel like I'm living chapter 2 of a Goosebumps novel.

@lightweight @downey I like this quote: "I feel strongly that, no matter the original intentions, incentives ultimately determine behaviour."

That is how I like to think about things.

“Simplicity is a great virtue but it requires hard work to achieve it and education to appreciate it. And to make matters worse: complexity sells better.” ― Edsger W. Dijkstra

Sometimes people resentfully tell me that software workers are a new kind of modern aristocracy. They use words like bourgeoisie, and that can be true.

But most of the folks in software are a new kind of blue collar worker. The big difference is that this time around the entire industry centers in thought. This resets the industrialization clock for this era and creates a keyhole into that opportunity for a more just society to emerge, just as both Marx and Bakunin suggested.
