GIMP 3.0 is released, check it out!

gimp.org/news/2025/03/16/gimp-

A huge THANK YOU to everyone who contributed in any way - from testing and submitting bug reports through to designing, coding, fixing, packaging, testing some more, translating, documenting, hosting, administration, so many people, so much work, so much to be thankful for!

Welcome to GIMP 3.0!

@GIMP Would've been a great opportunity to change the name.

@scy So this is a swearword for gay people? I did not know this.

@supertobi @giggls @scy

So does another very offensive word for gay people starting with F. Doesn't make it ok.

@Toastface @supertobi @giggls @scy Would anybody be interested in a rebranding fork? We leave everything as it us, but change the logo, name, which means making a new repo, doing some changes to the website contents, registering a new url, and then advertise in thr community why the change.

GIMP

@fallbackerik @Toastface @supertobi @giggls @scy and also change the plug-in API, rewrite 10,000+ plug-ins and scripts, courses, documentation, 70+ language translations, find hosting for > 100K downloads/day...

Changing the name is a possibility for the future; for now we have what we have. A hostile fork is always possible, but you do need a team of developers.

@GIMP @fallbackerik @supertobi @giggls @scy

I understand the scope of work and don't expect miracles. Perhaps rewording your FAQ would make it seem a little less hostile to the idea that the name might be inappropriate.

@GIMP @fallbackerik @Toastface @supertobi @giggls @scy

You could just drop the G from the abbreviation, the word "IMP" would work fine as it's a mischievous fairy.

I mean this in a really positive way: you have an army of people waiting to promote you and support you, but they're being held back because of the letter G. It would be a tiny change and massive reward for you 🙂

@FediThing @GIMP @fallbackerik @Toastface @supertobi @giggls @scy there once was an attempt to create a fork called "glimpse" but that project got discontinued

@FediThing @GIMP @fallbackerik @Toastface @supertobi @giggls @scy Or they can drop the P. Call it GIM since the "Program" part of the acronym is redundant.

@GIMP That is assuming, that you really want to remove the word from everything. It'd be way easier to only adjust the branding, while keeping the API stable, right?

@moanos @GIMP Also conveniently ignoring that the longer they wait to make the change, the higher those numbers climb.

This is such a no-brainer. It's 2025. How is this still an issue?

@GIMP @moanos And then the complaints about the naming of API calls would come in…

@rstein @GIMP @moanos
Oh yes let's definitely spend lots & lots of time worrying about hypotheticals.

@FeralRobots @rstein @GIMP @moanos Not a hypothetical. Glimpse maintainer originally patched the API bits of code as well, broke everything, and reverted

@rstein @GIMP Then you could say "no that is too much".
But saying "Let's not do A because then people ask B and B is hard" is not a good reason to not do A.

@GIMP @fallbackerik @Toastface @supertobi @giggls @scy
"Rewrite 10,000+ plug-ins & scripts" is disingenuous, to start with.
Nobody anywhere is asking you to make those changes right away - & indeed, probably most people wouldn't even perceive the most difficult changes.
Admit it: You just don't want to change it.

@FeralRobots @fallbackerik @Toastface @supertobi @giggls @scy Personally i do want to see change. We don’t today have consensus in the team to make that change, so posting as GIMP_Official i can’t say what will happen yet, but we’ve agreed last yearto discuss it further. It’s more work than it might at first appear. I should have said, some things that would be affected include... rather than change... we wouldn't be rewriting all the scripts you're right, sorry.

@GIMP @FeralRobots @Toastface @supertobi @giggls @scy Is there a way to follow the progress on thst topic? Is there something like a PEP (see Python) or Pull Request one could subscribe to?

@fallbackerik @FeralRobots @Toastface @supertobi @giggls @scy not right now, sorry. It would likely be considerably more than a single pull request, involving legal contracts, moving the Web site and all the bugs, and a lot more. This is not to say it should not be done, but if you heard about the GIMP 3 release you'd presumably also hear about a name change. Thanks for asking!
