My niece is interested in joining the Fediverse ... Any smallish servers that might be of interest to her?

She likes things , , , , , ,

Any suggestions?

@AdamBishop

I think there is a list somewhere...

Right now, I am with Mamot.fr and I have not published in ages in Art.mastodon.

There so many more of them right now. I am certainly interested in finding out what answers you get.

@ophiocephalic 🙏 Thank you very much. This seems like a really great option for her. 👏 Esoteric, friendly and genuinely good people it seems. ✨

@ophiocephalic She joined mas..to for the moment (mas.to/@Bry_bish_bosh), as I think she's still finding her feet in the Fediverse, but she might switch once she understands better how it all works. I think the whole concept of servers is very confusing for people new to the Fediverse in general. That's why I try to use "community" as a rough proxy for "server". Still, it's a difficult concept in general for people used to centralisation in everything (me included).

Yes, that's a good strategy. In fact, further on, "community server" can be a helpful proxy for "instance"

@ophiocephalic Right, I hadn't thought about gradually putting the two words together 🙏

@AdamBishop on your niece: she can join any server and search for all the things she loves through # or ?. The important thing is using a server who is reliable, doesn’t crash or be overly techie or dramatic. I picked Mastodon.scot because it is full of warm-hearted folk, wherever you come from, and is very very reliable, ( I buy a coffee, virtually for them every month, I’m so grateful) plus the bonus of lots of photographers and crafters and great scenery.
